Access to Westlake Scholaris from a home computer will be via https://scholaris.westlakegirls.school.nz.
The https indicates it is via a secure connection. This connection is secured by a properly validated certificate of the same standard that online business uses. The supplier we usually use (because they provide certificates free to schools) is ipsCA, whose Server ID certificates ensure the identity of the website and sender of encrypted information.
This same certificate may however result in a challenge when you go to the school portal if you have non-default settings – usually as a result of having the Security settings in your browser set to High.
Rather than downgrade your security settings, usually the best solution to the challenge is to go into your browser preferences and add the school URL to your “Trusted Sites”. In Internet Explorer this can be done by going to Tools/Internet Options/Security/Trusted Sites and Adding the site.
You may also set your mind at rest by checking the certificate from the school which is installed on your computer – in IE if you click on the padlock for the secure communication, you can View the certificate and, it should show it was issued by a valid Certification Authority (typically ipsCA CLASEA1 Certification Authority for *.westlakegirls.school.nz).
If the challenge over the certificate continues to be a problem for you, then two further things to try are: clear your SSL cache – in IE go to Tools/Internet Options/Content/Clear SSL State then close and restart your browser. Lastly, you can consider lowering your Security level – if you run IE at maximum security levels, it can prevent you gaining access to valid sites or at least render valid sites relatively unworkable.
Please note that the only browser fully supported for Scholaris is Internet Explorer v6 SP1 or above. Firefox is usually satisfactory in most respects and is the recommended solution for Mac users. For home users the recommended minimum for Scholaris access is broadband 256K down/128Kup with higher speed recommended if any larger files or multimedia access is desired.
