How did you feel when you learned you would be in this role?
When I first found out I would be in this leadership role I felt really overwhelmed with a mix of excitement and nervousness. I initially had doubts whether I was the right person for the job, and I knew I had big shoes to fill, as Anahera (last year’s Deputy head prefect) did such a great job.
However, after taking some time to reflect, I recognised that the strengths and qualities I have would add value to this role. I also realised this role is not about replicating what others have done, but instead contributing my own skills, values and perspectives. With this in mind my nerves quickly turned to excitement. I feel honoured to have this opportunity to be a leader within the school I love being part of, and to grow both as a leader and person.
Why do you think you were chosen (what special leadership qualities do believe you have?)
Throughout my time at Westlake, I have been involved in a wide range of groups, which has allowed me to connect with people from different backgrounds, year levels, and cultures. A large part of this involvement has been through sport, particularly rowing, basketball and netball. Being part of these teams has taught me the importance of dedication, teamwork, communication, and commitment, as well as supporting others to work towards a shared goal.
Through my sporting opportunities, I have also developed a strong work ethic and an understanding that leadership is not just about individual performance, but about encouraging and uplifting those around me. I enjoy motivating others and leading by example, whether that is through effort, attitude or reliability. All these experiences have shaped me into an approachable supportive leader.
What’s your main goal in this role? (Or, what would you like to change, this year?)
I just want to ensure I am really present at school, especially for the juniors. I want to be a recognisable and approachable person that really is the connection between staff and students. One of the goals that I always had for this role was to enhance the presence of Māori in the school. I think we are already taking so many steps towards this, with our new whare being built, regular karakia, and use of reo Māori. I aim to further this, to have Māori being an everyday occurrence for our students. I have been fortunate enough to be very involved with Te Ao Māori at our kura, so anything I can do to further this is a goal of mine. Apart from this, I just want to teach our students – especially juniors – to enjoy high school and learn to have a good time while they’re here.
How do you intend to use your position ‘for good’ this year?
Key to my journey has been establishing strong relationships. In my time at school I have been lucky enough to form close friendships with students across all year groups, and having their support and guidance has shaped who I am today. Without their support, I would have found it a lot harder to find my place and give things a go.
Therefore I intend to use this position for good by supporting girls to develop relationships not only with their peers, but with staff and students across all year groups. Key to this will require being approachable and a good listener so students, especially those new to school, feel comfortable to seek my support when needed. It is my hope that everyone feels like they belong at Westlake.
What’s your main goal in this role? (Or, what would you like to change this year?)
My main goal in this role is to create an inclusive environment between different year groups, where everyone feels listened to and heard. I would like to help students build more connections across year levels so they have the support they need in all aspects of school life. I am also hoping to encourage girls of all year groups to feel confident to try a range of different activities during the school year, both inside and outside of the classroom.
