2022 WGHS Basketball

The Westlake Girls Premier Team leads by example when it comes to basketball.  Its athleticism, professionalism, and team culture, regularly inspires up and coming players to follow suit.

As the 2021 Auckland Secondary Schools Premier League Champion, Westlake Girls continues to attract some of the most talented players on the North Shore and easily fields competitive teams in both the Harbour and Auckland Leagues.  With an eager eye on promoting participation at school, basketball is also an excellent sport to have fun and play socially with friends in the Under-17 and Under-19 Harbour competitions.  For new Year 9 players, the Junior competition is played at North Shore Event Centre on Wednesdays between 4 – 6pm starting in early May.

Senior students are encouraged to experience the joy of coaching a junior team however, we also welcome enthusiastic parents who are interested in coaching or managing their daughter’s team. The regular season for all teams begins in early May, culminating in early October with the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championship.

Trials for all teams begin in on Saturday 13 February with a strong focus on 3-on-3 teams being selected for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships held in late March.  With its origins in street basketball, the half court, 3-person game (which debuted at the Tokyo Olympics this year) sees 4 x teams of 5 competing in the Senior Elite, Senior Open, Junior Elite, and Junior Open Grades at the Champs.   If you are interested in basketball, then please complete the form on the registration tab to the right or if you have any questions, please contact April Ieremia in the Sports Department.

Volunteer Roles

Coach Requirements

  • If you have played or coached we NEED you (even if you haven’t played since high school!)
  • Coaches must be able to run a practice during the week at a time suitable to them and the team
  • Coaches must be able to attend games

Manager Requirements

  • Point of contact between students, parents/caregivers and coach
  • Email, text or Facebook weekly game times and reminder for practices
  • Co-ordinate weekly rotation for parent scorers
  • If available on game day, score or be the back up support for the coach

Score Person Requirements

  • It goes without saying that this is the best seat in the house.  It requires you to sit on the score bench each game (can be shared between parents/helpers), be responsible for either completing the score sheet, and running the clock or electronic score board. Full training can be given for this role if you are unsure or have never sat on the score bench before.
