New Zealand Secondary Schools Basketball Champions

2023 Westlake Girls Basketball

The Westlake Girls Premier Team finished an undefeated season last year by winning the New Zealand Secondary Schools Basketball Championship in Palmerston North for the first time in the school’s history.  The outstanding achievement was led by Heard Coach Bronwen Davidson and Assistant Coach, Nela Fotu who return to the programme in 2023 to do it again.  The team’s athleticism, professionalism, and team culture, attracts basketball hopefuls to the school on a regular basis and we offer competitive opportunities to students from  Year 9 through to the Premier team each year.

However, if the social pace is more your cup of tea, the Under 17 and Under 19 grades at North Harbour offer students a less intense or more relaxed pathway to the game. The Junior Competition for Year 9 and 10’s is played after school from 4pm – 6pm on Wednesdays in Term 2 and Term 3. The Open Grade is played on Thursday nights with the Premiers competing on Fridays in a home and away format.  The Under 17 and Under 19 are usually played on a Thursday or Friday night.

Senior students are encouraged to experience the joy of coaching a junior team however, we also welcome enthusiastic parents who are interested in coaching or managing their daughter’s team. The regular season for all teams begins in early May, culminating in early August for the local competition and then in early October for the Premier team.

Trials for all teams begin in on Saturday 11 February with a strong focus on Junior and Senior 3-on-3 teams being selected for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships which is held in late March Senior Elite, Senior Open, Junior Elite, and Junior Open Grades at the Champs.

Join us on Tuesdays in Term 2 from 2nd May in Gym 3 from 4:30PM to 6:00PM for some fun basketball skill development sessions.

During our sessions we will work on Beginner/Intermediate level workouts that will help improve our:

  • Ball handling
  • Finishing
  • Shooting
  • Passing
  • Defense
  • Decision Making

We’re hoping that by working on improving ourselves as players will transcend to the respective WGHS teams you are playing in. These trainings are not to replace your already team training with your WGHS team. This is just an option to work on yourself on the side. This will also be another opportunity to get to know other peers that share the same enthusiasm for the game as you do. We will provide the equipment. All we ask is that you bring something to drink and the enthusiasm to get better together.

Please complete the form on the registration tab to the right or if you have any questions, please contact Liz O’Leary in the Sports Department.

Volunteer Roles

Coach Requirements

  • If you have played or coached we NEED you (even if you haven’t played since high school!)
  • Coaches must be able to run a practice during the week at a time suitable to them and the team
  • Coaches must be able to attend games

Manager Requirements

  • Point of contact between students, parents/caregivers and coach
  • Email, text or Facebook weekly game times and reminder for practices
  • Co-ordinate weekly rotation for parent scorers

Score Person Requirements

  • It goes without saying that this is the best seat in the house.  It requires you to sit on the score bench each game (can be shared between parents/helpers), be responsible for either completing the score sheet, and running the clock or electronic score board. Full training can be given for this role if you are unsure or have never sat on the score bench before.
