2020 WGHS Basketball

Basketball is a very popular sport at Westlake Girls High School with the Premier team constantly featuring at the national championships. Most of the teams compete in the local North Harbour Basketball competition which offers several grades including Open, Under 19, Under 17, Junior Under 15 A and B Grades. Games are typically played after school on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday depending on the competition with the Premier Team competing in the Auckland League on Friday evening and sometimes Monday’s. Trials for school teams begin in March 2020.

2020 New Zealand Secondary Schools 3 x 3 Championship: 1 – 3 April 2020

Westlake Girls begins each season with strong teams competing in the NZSS 3 x 3 Basketball Championship and we are the defending Junior Elite, Junior Open and Senior Open Champions. Trials will be held in early February and players will be notified.

Volunteer Basketball Roles

To run a successful basketball programme we require the assistance of parents/caregivers, siblings and family friends. To be able to enter a team, we must have a coach for each team. Each team must also provide one score-person other than a player or coach, for his or her own game.

Coach Requirements

  • If you have played or coached we NEED you (even if you haven’t played since high school!)
  • Coaches must be able to run a practice during the week at a time suitable to them and the team
  • Coaches must be able to attend games

Manager Requirements

  • Point of Contact between students, parents/caregivers and coach
  • Email, text or Facebook weekly game times and reminder for practices
  • If available on game day be the back up support for the coach

Score Person Requirements

Required to sit on the score bench each game (can be shared between parents/helpers)
Responsible for either completing the score sheet, running the clock or electronic score board
Full training can be given for this role if you are unsure or have never sat on the score bench before
