Waka Ama

2026 WAKA AMA

Westlake Girls returned to the sport of Waka Ama in November 2023, and the young team showed enormous potential at the Auckland Secondary Schools Junior Championships. After just four weeks of training, guided by their experienced and charismatic coach, Sugar Te Paa from the Taniwha Outrigger Canoe Club, the two Year 10 teams showed natural aptitude and competitive edge in their novice season.  Now as Year 11’s and Seniors, they have continued to the Auckland Senior Secondary Schools Champs and aspire to make the National event.

Beyond the physical health benefits for paddlers, waka ama enhances wellbeing, connecting paddlers to each other through whanaungatanga (process of forming and maintaining relationships) and manaakitanga (generosity and caring for others), and to the environment through the practice of kaitiakitanga (guardianship).
