Largest WGHS ski team hits the slopes

Westlake Girls sent its largest ski team to the 2019 North Island Ski Championship at Mt Ruapehu in September, with 11 Juniors and 2 Seniors competing in the Giant Slalom at Whakapapa.

The planned date for the event, 16 September, was postponed due to high winds but that only made way for a sublime weather two days later. Westlake was fortunate to be allowed to enter three teams this year, giving more students the opportunity to participate and build the enthusiasm for the future … and they did. Mrs Field and Ms Ieremia were very proud of the team.

Top skier:        Greta Pilkington finished       16/106 competitors
Top Junior:     Claudia Pilkington finished   30/138 competitors
Harriet Gowing finished        31/138 competitors
Overall Team:  Westlake 1 finished 18 of 108 teams

Coco Mauger and Isabella Wickham are representing Westlake Girls at the North Island Snowboarding Champs at Turoa at the end of September.

Bronze medal in ski champs

Sian Allan (pictured) competed in the Girant Slalom event at the North Island Secondary School Ski Champs in 2018. Postponements of the event int he first two days due to poor weather meant that a longer than usual course of 23 was set the 215 competitors in the senior men's and women's division.

Sian had a fantastic race in challenging conditions to place third out of the 106 senior women competing.
