After qualifying by winning the Central North West Zone Tag Football tournament in early April, the Westlake Girls High School Senior Tag Football team qualified to attend the Auckland Secondary Schools Senior Tag Football Championships.
This tournament took place in mid-April and although eight of the team members who won the qualifying tournament were at Year 11 Physical Education Camp, the Westlake coach was able to get other students from the school to fill the place of the students that were away.
Despite this setback, the Westlake team performed extremely well. They ended up second in pool play and had to meet the winner of the other pool, Avondale College in the semi-final. Westlake won that game 9 – 4 and then played the winner of the other semi-final – Auckland Girls Grammar School (AGGS) – in the Grand Final. The scores were tied at full time in the final but the Westlake team managed to stop AGGS scoring a try in extra time, and with the next possession of the ball, the Westlake team scored a try to win the final and Gold medal. This team are now the Auckland Secondary Schools Tag Football Champions.
